In this article, you’ll learn how to make an impact with your resume with powerful, effective achievement statements. So, let’s jump right in for this in-depth article. This lesson is dedicated to your achievement statements. Now achievement statements are the backbone of your resume. They help you focus on the results that you have achieved rather than the tasks that you’ve performed. So, focusing on your results will help you identify the outcomes that you’ve had, and it will make you more attractive to an employer.
Achievement statements show what you do better than anyone else in the same field. Achievement statements demonstrate the problems you’ve solved, how you solve them, and the impact you made. Now, I have designed a process when it comes to writing the perfect achievement statement.
You want to make sure you have an action verb plus a task plus the result. And I’m going to add something in here that we will talk about in later modules, but quantifying your results. Now we’re going to walk through each of these items one by one. So, let’s first look at an action verb and what I mean by an action verb. So, you’ll notice in this example, at the very beginning of each bullet point, we are starting with an action verb.
- We have Managed
- We have Maintained
- We have defined
So in this case, we have the word “identify”, the word “create”, “we have managed”, “we have maintained”, and then “we have defined”. These action verbs are what will take your resume to the next level. And they are the beginning of those achievement statements. Next up is your task. What was the task that you performed? In this case, this was proposed recommendations for better efficiency, and promote new process improvements in this situation, maintain business contracts, and liaison with outside groups and professional associations.
- Six new sales training programs that enabled staff.
Action Verb + Tasks
- Defined and coordinated six new sales training programs that enabled staff.
And again, these are just the tasks. And then in this case, “defined and coordinated six new sales training programs that enabled staff”. So, we have our action verbs identified and we have our tasks identified. We now want to talk about what was the result.
- So that revenue growth and lead generation can flourish
- In order to keep the company abreast of advancements and developments in the industry.
- To more quickly achieve their sales goals and surpass company expectations
In this case, the result was “So that revenue growth and lead generation can flourish”. In another scenario “In order to keep the company abreast of advancements and developments in the industry”, Also this case “To more quickly achieve their sales goals and surpass company expectations”. So, as you can see, in our example to complete these achievement statements, we started with an action verb. We then had a task, and then one of the most important parts of this is we had the result. So, I now want to show you an example of an achievement statements on with all three factors in action
Action Verb + Tasks + Results
- Defined and coordinated six new sales training programs that enabled staff to quickly achieve their sales goals and surpass company expectations.
